Culturelle is a popular probiotic made with LactobacillusGG. It is available in several formulas and has been well received.

Lactobacilli convert lactose into lactic acid, and they do not require oxygen for energy production. It is important to note that while it is a lactic acid bacteria, it is safe for people who are lactose intolerant since no lactose is present. It is from the same bacterial family as L. Acidophilus.

Many studies have shown the multiple benefits of regular probiotic intake, especially in reference to intestinal upsetThe American Gastroenterological Association suggests daily probiotics as a supplement to digestive treatment. Lactobacilli were tested by the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and UCLA and were found to protect against tumors and cancers in mice. Culturelle claims that LactobacillusGG is the “#1 clinically studied probiotic strain” and that “Over 800 scientific studies and over 25 years of research have shown or demonstrated the safety and efficacy of Lactobacillus GG,” which they say is “Based on the number of Lactobacillus GG clinical studies, as of May 2015.” It is also claimed to survive stomach acid and form a protective barrier against harmful bacteria.

According to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center a daily dose of probiotics should supply from around 3-5 billion live organisms, and more if traveling or suffering digestive upset or on antibiotics.

How to take it Culturelle is available in capsules, chewables, and powdered packets. There are lines designed for digestive health, immunity support, vegetarian diet, and two children’s formulas. There are eight different choices in all, including vegetarian and extra strength.

Dietary Concerns Culturelle does contain a small amount of sucrose but has no:

  • synthetic colors
  • preservatives
  • dairy
  • lactose
  • milk
  • yeast
  • wheat
  • gluten
  • soy

It should be safe for most people. Culturelle, along with many other probiotics, was tested by ConsumerLab.com in 2013 (https://www.consumerlab.com/reviews/Probiotic_Supplements_and_Kefir/probiotics/PREVIEW/). While many were found to have less than the advertised amounts of organisms, Culturelle was found to only have 58%. While this probably poses no danger, it is possible that customers do not receive the amount of organisms they believe they do.

Storage Culturelle does not need to be stored in the refrigerator, but like all probiotics it should be protected from heat, light, moisture, and oxygen. It comes in protective foil packaging that should keep most of these things out. Each dose is individually wrapped.
