InnerFuel Review Summary

InnerFuel is a prebiotic supplement that helps feed your native probiotics. The 3 main ingredients are:

  1. Organic Acacia
  2. Sunfiber®
  3. Resistaid®

As you would expect for a BulletProof product, each ingredient has substantial research justifying it’s inclusion in InnerFuel. The benefits of taking these ingredients are primarily digestive, or immune enhancing.

I think there is more and more evidence that prebiotics may be more powerful than probiotics…so I’m glad a Probiotics.org reader, Peter Nippard, recommended that Probiotics.org review this solid and well researched prebiotic product.

This product is flavorless, and can be blended in BulletProof coffee, or whatever kind of drink or smoothie you often have. Neither hot or cold drinks will degrade the effectiveness of the ingredients in InnerFuel, so you can get quite creative :)

There are possible side effects for taking prebiotics – mainly in the form of flatulence or bloating. So I think it’s key to start at or below the recommended dose, and slowly build up the dose to find where the point of maximum benefit and minimum side effects is for you.

It was easy to rate InnerFuel 5 stars based on scientific research backing the ingredients, ease of blending, and the strong track record of BulletProof’s products.

What Are Prebiotics?

Prebiotics are special types of fiber that have substantial immune and digestive benefits.A These fibers are consumed by our body’s good bacteria, almost exclusively in our colon/large intestines. You can think of prebiotics as fertilizers for our own probiotic colonies living deep in our guts. And since probiotics are so beneficial to us, it’s wise to support our own probiotic colonies thrive.

Many supplements aren’t needed if you eat and live correctly. But, in the case of prebiotics, these are extremely hard to get in our diet – even if you eat lots of salads and steamed veggies. So, I think prebiotic supplementation of InnerFuel is justified for 100% of people who can tolerate it.

Ingredients in InnerFuel Prebiotic

There are just 3 ingredients in this product. With the help of Dr. Edward Rose MD’s meticulous literature review, I spell out the science behind InnerFuel’s ingredients.

Organic Acacia

Pictured above – Acacia tree in Africa’s Serengeti

Acacia gum is also known as gum Arabic and has been used for centuries in various forms. It is a thick, gummy syrup that comes from the sap of the Acacia tree. It is a complex mixture of glycoproteins and polysaccharides predominantly consisting of arabinose and galactose. It is soluble in water, edible, and is used in the food industry primarily as a stabilizer and thickener. It is found in soft drink syrup and “hard” gummy candies such as gumdrops, marshmallows, and M&M’s chocolate candies. In the pharmaceutical industry, acacia is used as a thickener, emulsifier, and a binder in many medications.

Acacia is a soluble dietary fiber, meaning it is a complex polysaccharide that is primarily indigestible to both humans and animals. It has an excellent safety profile. Relevant to the current product, it is not degraded in the intestine, but is fermented in the colon by microorganisms. It is therefore a prebiotic.B In fact, several articles refer to it as “bifidogenic”, as it supports the growth of bifidobacteria in the gut.C It is a known cause of flatulence in higher doses.

Sunfiber® (Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum)

Pictured above – guar gum seed pods

Sunfiber is a proprietary powder derived from guar gum. There are some research studies on Sunfiber, but the science for this ingredient relies on the research done on guar gum.

Going back to the mid 1990’s there are research studies for the SunFiber product itselfD. The early studies check SunFiber’s safetyE, but more recent studies look into appetite controlF and improving probiotic population composition.G

Guar Gum

Guar gum is another soluble dietary fiber and is derived from guar beans. Most of the world’s guar beans are grown in India, although a significant crop is grown in the southern US states as well. The beans are dried, then ground to a powder and treated with acid (hydrolyzed) to reduce its viscosity. When combined with calcium, guar gum forms a gel that is useful as a thickening agent.

In the body, guar gum is mostly nondigestible. It adds bulk and filler to foods, helping to create a sense of satiety and fullness. It is a known cause of flatulence in higher doses. Its use has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of irritable bowel syndromeH and is also bifidogenic (which means it helps bifdobacterium thrive, which are the largest constituent in your colon).I

ResistAid®

ResistAid® is a proprietary blend of Larch tree fibers. There are a number of studies that show significant immune benefits to consuming ResistAid®. J,K

Larch Arabinogalactan

Arabinogalactans are biopolymers that are either of plant or bacterial sources. In plants such as the larch tree, they provide exceptional structural support for the tree. As a food supplement it is a non-digestible source of soluble fiber that affects the health of the gut microbiome. The arabinogalactans are fermented by bacteria, releasing short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). The SCFA are an important source of immediate energy for the human body, since they are small enough for direct absorption into the blood stream to the liver with the need for chylomicron formation. SCFA, particularly butyrate, also contribute to colonic epithelial health.L Larch arabinogalactan seems to exert a positive influence over the adaptive immune system in humans.M

InnerFuel Allergen Information

I am a bit puzzled. I have not be able to to find formal information about the allergens in InnerFuel. I assume that it is free of all allergens, but I can’t say for certain. I’ve emailed my contact at Bulletproof, and will update this review as soon as I hear back from them.

Calories Per Serving

InnerFuel has 35 Calories per 2 scoop serving size. None of these calories come from sugar. These calories shouldn’t cause a spike in blood sugar, since there is so much fiber in this supplement.

How Does It Taste? How does it blend?

The great thing is that it doesn’t really taste like anything at all. It blends super easily – no clumping. It can be useful for thickening out smoothies or other drinks. It also works well in upgraded Bulletproof Coffee

InnerFuel Recipes

Bulletproof provided an upgraded Bulletproof Coffee recipe that includes InnerFuel prebiotic…it’s a pretty straightforward upgrade to the original recipe :)

What is InnerFuel Starting Dosage

The recommended dosage of InnerFuel is 2 scoops of powder. But if I were you, I would start out at 1/2 a scoop for the first week. If 1/2 a scoop went okay, then I would have 1 scoop per day the next week. And I would slowly build it up to the recommended dose. If you get any of the side effects I mention below, then I would decrease the dose and stick with what your body tolerates.

Possible Side Effects

Flatulence looks like the most common side effect. This side effect can occur when you take more prebioitic InnerFuel than your body is ready for. Bloating is also a likely side effect since this product broken down via probiotic fermentation in your colon.
